Christal E. Carmichael, MA, LPC, LCAS-A
Founder and CEO
As Chief Executive Officer, founder, and acting Clinical Director of Better Communities, Christal Carmichael, continues to lead one of the most authentic and effective mental health agencies, serving the entire North Central Region of North Carolina. Established January 2010, Better Communities has been recognized for providing high-quality psychiatric and therapeutic care to our community. Christal’s mission is to serve and treat those with mental health challenges so that they may have the privilege of living an emotionally balanced lifestyle.
Serving others has been a natural inclination for Christal and she has made it her lifelong commitment to serve God, her family, and her community. As the Founder of Better Communities, Christal is able to live out her passion for serving people and her love for teaching and empowering others. Her gentle, yet strong and teachable spirit has afforded her numerous opportunities to mentor and inspire others to make an impact on today’s global society.
Christal received her Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from North Carolina Central University. During her undergraduate years, she served as Miss Freshman, Miss Psychology and reigned as Miss North Carolina Central University. Her civic organizations include: a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, a board member of the Wake County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, a supporter of the Triangle Down Syndrome Network and a Life member of NAACP. She is also a member of Psi Chi Honor Society as well as the American Psychological Association and the American Counseling Association.
As CEO, Christal mentors post Masters’ level students, most of who have gone on to prominent positions of their own. Christal is an extraordinary CEO, therapist and teacher, highly regarded in the field of Psychology and throughout the mental health community.
She has a faculty appointment at North Carolina Central University in the area of Psychology and is involved in the online course development via Distance Education. She also teaches Psychology at other Universities across the state.
Christal has been an invited speaker and radio guest, many times, all over the state of North Carolina. Her vision and leadership are remarkable, and her accomplishments have been transformative for her organization. She has been and continues to be a noteworthy role model, change agent, and advocate of many.
Jocelyn King-Delay, LPC, LPCS, LCAS, CCS
Jocelyn is originally from Asheville, NC. She has been working in the mental health and substance field over 15 years as a counselor and most recently a clinical supervisor for agencies and individuals seeking licensure as mental health and substance abuse counselors. Jocelyn graduated from The Ohio State University in Criminology and obtained her Master’s Degree in Counseling at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. She also enjoys creative arts and likes to incorporate creativity in counseling and supervision.
Director of Quality Assurance
Mrs. Evans received her bachelor’s degree in Business and Office Education from Fayetteville State University. After completing graduate work at North Carolina State University and East Carolina University, Mrs. Evans worked for over 30 years as an educator for the Cumberland County School system. Retiring from Pine Forest High School in 2004, she soon after became a mentor for beginning teachers in order to instill the valuable knowledge she has gained throughout the years. Teaching has always been her childhood dream, and her goal is to inspire others just as her own teachers and family members did for her.
Mrs. Evans also enjoys reading, traveling, shopping, cooking, and spending time with both her family and church family.
Dr. Chandra Torry
Director of Human Resources and Payroll Administrator
Dr. Torry earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from Campbell University School of Pharmcy, a Master of Science from Fayetteville State University and has recently become a certified Pharmacy regulatory Specialist through the Pharmaceutical Education Consultants, Inc. Throughout her years as a pharmacy manager, Human Resources became her area of expertise. She is now a practicing Professional in Human Resources for Better Communities as the Director of Human Resources. She brings over 7 years of large retail format experience to our agency and is committed to implementing the sometimes complex aspects of HR Practices and US laws and regulations in a seamless, tactical manner.
Alicia Wiggins, MA, NCC, LPC
Licensed Professional Counselor
Ms. Wiggins received her Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University in General Science with a Psychology minor. She worked as a Science teacher in the Detroit Public School system as she completed her master's program in Counseling at Eastern Michigan University.
After her move to the Raleigh-Durham area in 2007, Ms. Wiggins worked as a counselor with children from kindergarten to 8th grade. Her therapeutic approach centers on brief solution focused strategies. She strives to help all children and families feel comfortable through the therapeutic process and to provide support resources for them.
Ms. Wiggins also values time with her family and enjoys movies and quiet time.
Lesley Neifert LPCA, LCAS
Licensed Professional Counselor
Lesley Neifert is a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist and a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate. Lesley graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Services and a Master of Science in Substance Abuse and Clinical Counseling from East Carolina University. Throughout her career, she has worked with children, teens, adults, and families in a variety of therapeutic settings including inpatient, day treatment, and intensive outpatient. Substance abuse, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, relationship issues, stress management, low self-esteem, and parenting guidance and support are just some of the areas Lesley provides treatment in. While Lesley’s counseling approach is heavily reliant on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Family Systems Therapy, she also recognizes each client has a unique personality and set of needs. Because of this, her style is eclectic and flexible. It is Lesley’s goal to assist clients in gaining a greater sense of autonomy and self-care while enabling them to experience healthy relationships with self and others.
Shannon Beall, LCSW-A
Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate
Shannon Beall is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Spanish from Duke University. She worked for two years as a research assistant at the Durham VA Medical Center. Shannon worked on research studies focusing on veterans with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. She received her Master of Social Work degree from Washington University in St. Louis, concentrating in clinical mental health. Shannon has experience working in outpatient substance abuse and community mental health agencies. Her main therapeutic approaches include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and Family Systems Therapy. Shannon realizes that every person is unique and she is flexible to adapting her style to fit the personality of the client. Shannon is also a Zumba instructor and in her free time, loves to bake, watch movies, and spend time with family and friends.
